Environmental Policy Statements - how they can benefit you!

With the global movement towards green business, it is becoming increasingly important to have a comprehensive environmental policy in place. The first stage of this should be developing an environmental policy statement. An environmental policy statement is a short but concise item documenting your environmental goals and objectives and the basis of your policy. It can be general or specific depending on your wishes but for obvious reasons, the more specific it is and the more goal-based, the higher the likelihood of better results when implementing policies. Environmental policy statements have two areas of benefit and these are internal and external.

What to do if a customer asks you if you are green?

It is increasingly common these days for businesses to be selected on their green credentials so having an appropriate response is crucial when seeking to attract and maintain customers. You should be able to make solid claims which can be backed up if required and should be confident in your company’s ability in the face of such inquiries. While there is a massive amount of environmental improvements that can be made, the general public and customers are likely to be familiar with some aspects of environmental proactivity than others. This article highlights the relevant sections which are likely to be at the front of the public’s mind as well as highlighting what you should avoid doing when answering these questions. The what to avoid section is particularly relevant if you are seeking any form of environmental accreditation as environmental experts are most likely looking for these errors and will be quick to pick up on them and penalise accordingly.

Feed in Tariff + Renewable Heating Incentive

The feed in tariff came into effect on the 10th of April 2010 and what it does is essentially pays homes or businesses who generate their own renewable energy (additional premiums can be paid for any excess energy fed back into the grid). Given the high cost of installing renewable energy generating devices such as solar panels or wind farms, the government felt that it was unrealistic to expect people to adopt the technologies on a level that would meet their desired targets. In an effort to solve this issue, the government introduced the feed in tariff, where any renewable energy generated will allow you to benefit from compensation from the government and even higher compensation can be claimed if you generate enough energy to feed back into the grid.

Make your environmental improvements pay their own way!

While environmental upgrades and improvements frequently generate long term savings, they can be very costly initially and in some cases this can dissuade people from undertaking them. There are however two great ways that you can reduce the financial impact of greening your business. These are the ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) and via interest free loans offered by the Carbon Trust. Using these methods, it is possible to greatly reduce the costs and initial financial capital required for energy savings investments and instead, helps those upgrades pay their own way!

Green Procurement

Green procurement is essentially the process of taking into account a products environmental impacts when purchasing it. Rather than simply taking into account the impact of using an item or product, it revolves around the process of life-cycle costing where a cradle to grave approach is taken calculating a products environmental impact from manufacturing through to disposal. There are a number of advantages regarding green procurement. These can include advantages for your businesses such as less waste being generated, lower energy costs from running equipment and avoiding complicated legislation, the opportunity to attract new green customers. It can also provide benefits to your customers via increased choice, increased information and the opportunity to buy green should they desire (which is increasingly demanded). You are providing a more complete service and potentially generating simultaneous cost savings.

Biomass Boilers could stand to generate large savings so watch out for the RHI!

Currently, alternative fuel or biomass boilers are often viewed as too costly to be viable. While cheaper models are available, they generally require weekly cleaning to be performed by whoever purchases them and while still generating significant savings, may not be enough to justify their costs. While the more expensive models will generate significant savings, the initial cost is sufficient to dissuade the majority of companies from investing and the payback period can simply be too long for businesses to view them as viable. There is potentially however a new light at the end of the tunnel with the possible introduction of the Renewable Heating Incentive. This is a scheme implemented by Labour where companies can receive compensation for using renewable heating sources and is similar to the Feed-In Tariff regarding energy. While the new government unfortunately wish to review the implementation of the policy due to budget constraints, they have equally pledged a commitment to it meaning that while it may well be postponed; there is a real possibility of it becoming an actuality within the next few years. If it does become a reality, biomass boilers would cease to become financially dubious and would be an amazing opportunity to save money and the environment.

Energy Efficiency

When working in an office, a warehouse, or even at home, there are large amounts of machines and tools being used, most of which will require electricity to run.  While occasionally, they are being used in an efficient manner, the majority of the time, machinery is being used inefficiently and in many cases when it is not even needed.  This includes amongst other things, leaving computers on over nights and weekends or running more machines than are required.  This can be responsible for a massive amount of wasted energy, increased costs and emissions.  By making relevant adjustments and most of all by educating staff/friends as to the benefits of energy saving, it is possible to significantly reduce costs.  A recent study by the Carbon Trust indicates that a 20% reduction in energy use is equivalent to the bottom line benefit of a 5% increase in sales.

Save Money & The Environment

During times like these, a business’s ability to generate savings is crucial if they wish to remain competitive.  The good news is that there is a wide range of new ideas surfacing that will not only help a business to save money, but also to save the environment.  An area of significant impact for nearly all retail/commercial businesses is transport.  There are several areas and these include arriving and going home from work, business related travel and then of course products must be delivered from the manufacturer and in many cases, to the consumer.  With many people frequently on the road potentially traveling up to 40,000 miles per year simply on business trips alone, the amount of fuel used amounts to a very significant cost and also offers high potential savings.  While Office Club will be coming out with a more thorough set of guidelines on how to reduce your costs and in addition, your environmental impact, we will briefly look at one way it is possible to save money and save the planet regarding transport.

Niche Opportunity: Binding & Laminating
There is every chance that you might not be supplying the “complete office solution” to all of your customers. In many instances simple gap analysis shows that your customer might have a different supplier for different product groups, FM being a common one, but things like business machines and work wear are other common areas.

Finding that right contact could open up a whole new world of business, or sometimes just making sure that they are aware of the breadth of your offering can make a big difference. One such niche area is Binding & Laminating.

Fellowes binding and laminating range is now available from both Spicers and Vow, offering a wide range of product from entry level to top of the range, all in a stylish design. To help you get this message out to your customers we have available a 4-page mailer featuring these machines with some added value promotions thrown-in, some of which are totally unique to this mailer, including a free shredder with a Neptune Laminator or a USB Memory Stick with a Star Comb Binder.
